Often I find myself disgusted with the advertising I see around me. One of the many reasons that I don’t watch any TV on a regular basis (we do movies through Netflix) is the advertising. L1 has recently become addicted to the show “Heros.” He watched all last season on the computer over the summer, and has now begun to watch it on TV this fall and he wants me to sit with him while he watches it. Fine, I can craft or read or do things on the computer while he watches. Last night our TV remote wasn’t working so well so he couldn’t mute the commercials (can’t do it on the TV itself, just the remote!) and it was horrible. At one point I told him I couldn’t wait for the show to be over so we could have silence again. How do people stand that constant bombardment?! It made me so glad we don’t watch TV much.
It always makes me happy, however, when advertisers use their power for more beneficial purposes. Dove has been working on their “campaign for beauty” for a couple of years now. The Women and Gender Studies club at SJFC just sent out a link for a recent ad that is part of the campaign. I found it powerful in a positive way. I like when ads make you think (Inkwench: the central route to persuasion!!). Here it is:
I’d love to hear what you think of it!
