Well, okay now, I’m not completely sneaking it, as in hiding in a dark corner, but I do feel like I’m sneaking spare moments all over the place (knitting a row while showing a 10 minute movie clip in class yesterday, ahem). Today was my first break/chance to sew in what felt like ages. (Really, only since I finished those grandparent bags.)
Remember that whole discussion I had about princess stuff way back when? Well, Little Miss L4 was invited to a Princess Birthday Party this weekend, for the daughter of a good friend from high school. L4 and I are working on what she’ll wear. I knitted her a crown out of crepe paper (pattern in Alterknits for those readers interested) for her 1st birthday that she has always refused to wear until today, so I think that will be part of her outfit. Maybe over her construction hard hat? 🙂 Anyway, said birthday party looming ever closer prompted me to finally get myself to the sewing machine to make birthday presents. As I am in love with dressing L4 in the smocks I have made her, and made one for another little girl’s birthday this fall, I thought I’d go with that as a gift. Here it is, in all of its bad picture splendor (who knows when I’ll get good photos again with the upcoming weather forecast!):
The pattern is the one from Bend the Rules Sewing, with some revisions. I wasn’t in the mood to make bias tape today, so I decided to line it instead, that way I would haven’t to worry about edging it. I thought I was saving myself time…. bwahahah. I had to figure out how to do the shoulder seams (yes, the seam ripper and I were close companions today), which was a fun little challenge. Sewing is always an adventure in improving my spatial relation skills, which I can appreciate afterwards. The outside fabric is a light blue linen with flowers embroidered all over it (not by me!) and it is lined with a nice unbleached muslin. The ties in the back are brocade ribbon. I sigh happily when I look at it–too bad you can’t do the same with the picture! I also made a little bird like the ones I made for my babes, but don’t have a photograph of that.
After finishing up those projects I was on a roll. I’ve had fabric cut out and ready to sew for children’s place-mats and napkins for several weeks now, but my gift knitting has been taking precedence over everything else craft-wise. Today I was able to sew 4 napkins up and 3 place-mats. I should have them listed in my shop tomorrow, but here is a sneak peak of the napkins:
The other part of my day was spent with my auntie from this post, helping her with her holiday shopping. I’m glad she and L4 got to spend some time together, and I’m glad I was able to help her out with things. The surprising bit about our time together today was that as I was carrying my shopping bag (from home) on my arm at the end of our trip, she was admiring how big it was compared to those you can buy in the store and was saying how she was so sick of having plastic bags around. “Yippie, a good sign,” I thought. I am probably going to be making her a custom bag for her shopping now, even bigger than the ones that I already offer in the shop. Baby steps, but they all count when working toward treading more lightly on Gaia. And I feel like I’m actively working on my pledge from this post.
