Awhile ago I mentioned how I had read about Burt’s Bees having been bought by Clorox. I’ve still been struggling with this in my head, just as I have with Tom’s of Maine products. Part of me is frustrated that they “sold out,” but at the same time, I don’t know the entire reason for the companies selling. Another part of me wonders if it is a good thing because the products might be more widely available or perhaps more affordable to more consumers because of being owned by a larger company. Then I also wonder about finding replacement products–the money, not liking products, etc.
There has been a thread discussing some of these issues on Ravelry and someone posted the link showing all of the organic companies that are actually owned by large companies. It was disheartening. Here it is if you want to check it out. The whole situation is frustrating because I am constantly second-guessing myself about if I am actually making purchases that have less environmental impact. I might be getting this book off of my wish list so that I can start making things on my own. I had it from the library once and enjoyed reading it.
I’d really love to hear people’s thoughts about this issue. Your words often help me solidify a position for myself, or help me think of things/see things from a perspective I had missed.
