While reading Being Peace by Thich Nhat Hanh before bed one night recently I was completely struck by this quote:
Happiness is available . Please help yourself to it.
I read it to L1 and he, too, felt it resonate. And here were the words of inspiration I was seeking for another painting. After asking L1 about the colors he associated with happiness, and my own intuition about it as well, I gathered my material and set to work on a sunny winter afternoon.
In my mind my thoughts swirled with imagination born of color and words, amorphous in vision yet clear with joy. I cut fabric and paper, spread Modge Podge, squirted, rolled, and dabbed paint. The process of creation put me into such a state of bliss. Though a small part of my mind bleated, “You don’t know what you’re doing!!” I calmly ignored it and soaked in the sun as I went on painting, creating.
All of the grand wanderings of imagination were not realized once on the canvas. This is the way of creating for me, quite often. For you, too? For now, the painting is done. Maybe I’ll add to it later. We have plans to mat and frame it and hang it on a wall in the lower level of our home as a reminder to us all. L1 likens it to a sign with instructions–instructions we want to remember. 🙂
